Accessing the Network
Description:
This document contains information on network file sharing services provided to the faculty and staff of North Cobb Christian School. It provides account information and describes the process of accessing the school network (including your individual home directory/folder).
Account Information:
NCCS provides each faculty and staff member with their own network account. Account names are generated by using the first letter of the user's first name combined with their last name. For example John Doe would be known as jdoe. This approach works about 90% of the time. Conflicting usernames will be handled on an individual basis. For instance if a new employee named Jane Doe is hired her user name of jdoe would conflict with John Doe's username. The first attempt to resolve the conflict will be to add the new employee's middle initial to the username. Jane M. Doe would have a username of jmdoe.
Passwords:
A randomly generated default password will also be given to each user when their account is created. The user's must change this password as soon as possible. There are restrictions on passwords. Specifically, a password must contain at least 1 upper case letter AND 1 lower case letter AND 1 digit between 0 and 9 AND be at least 8 characters long. Also, the password may not contain your username.
File Storage:
NCCS provides each faculty and staff member with their own individual directory (folder) on a network server labeled with your user name. This directory will be referred to as your "Home Folder" since all individual home folders are stored in and shared from the same directory (called "home") on the server. Your home folder is accessible from any computer, is virus protected, and is backed up nightly. The NCCS Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) determines that uses will be granted access to their own home folder only and will not be granted access to anyone else's home folder.
In addition to the home directory, each member of a given department will be provided access to a single folder where they can share and store files that all members of that department will need to access and work with. These folders will be labeled by department name and stored in a single share on the server named "departments". Each department's folder will also be accessible from any computer, virus protected, and backed up nightly.
Due to the fact that all computers at NCCS are subject to restaging at any time without warning, the NCCS AUP states that all files on campus must be stored on the server in either your home folder or your department's folder. Do NOT store files in any other location (including "My Documents") other than one of the above two mentioned places. NCCS is only held responsible for backing up it servers and not individual work stations. Due to this policy, all files/applications stored locally are subject to loss at any time without previous notice, and will be erased if the computer is restaged.
Accessing The Network:
The process for logging into and access your shares on the server is dependent upon what platform you are using. In Windows the process is called “Map a Drive”. On a Mac it is called “Connect to Server”. A walk through of each process is provided to your right under the links “From Windows” and “From a Macintosh”.
